Criminal Complaints

Criminal complaints by private citizens are normally handled by the Municipal Court. Additional court information can be found at https://mtnj.org/departments/municipal_court/

People wishing to sign private complaints are required to fill out a probable cause affidavit.

If the court does not deem that there is probable cause for the charge, the complaint will not be served.

A police officer or the court can explain this process to the complainant.
